A cabin in the mountains near Ashville, North Carolina is the place to find solitude when you need it. This is Janis’s haven…to recharge, contemplate, plan and work ― lovely on a summer day, cozy in winter by the fire.
Nothing is amiss until a sudden February storm brings a marrow-numbing cold, cutting wind and sleet, and snow, a lot of snow, to the Great Smokies. After nightfall, above the wind, a scratching on her door sends her senses rocketing into the stratosphere. Janis forces herself to control a tremendous surge of adrenaline and think.
What or who is out there? No scenario she can conjure makes any sense, and the now frantic clawing continues.
Janis has visitors. Is it wise to invite them in? Does she have a humane choice? Not really.
Will she regret opening the door? Maybe not.
